When the Light Escapes

I’ve been waiting all week for today when Jody and I were going to get back in the Bay. We have been waiting for over 2-months to swim and miss our regular Bay vibe that brings delight. It’s been too long in a state of flux and miserable news. Let’s pick ourselves up and try a swim even though we won’t have the luxury of our clubhouse to shower off and dress. We can rough it with a gallon of water from home to rinse off before the drive back and after the swim. We can DO THIS.

I went to bed very early last night as I wanted a full night’s rest. I awoke at 6a, played GroundHog Day in the kitchen routine and set about to work on some grading of final exams. After 4 exams, I bounced over to Twitter to see what is new today and my mouth dropped open as I saw the picture of a gigantic blaze in the area where we swim at Aquatic Park in S.F. I had to wipe my eyes to look again and then I read the headline. It was, indeed, a huge blaze on Pier 45, right next to our area where we swim and not far from the South End Rowing Club and Dolphin Club.

I have been speechless since this discovery. I have messaged friends and posted on FB, but I’m walking in circles at home. This is devastating to the fish distribution companies that caught fire who have already been ravaged by the restaurants closing due to Covid-19 and Shelter-In-Place restrictions. This is devastating to the entire waterfront area. This is such sad news.

THANK GOODNESS, no injuries! THANK GOODNESS, the Liberty Ship was saved by SF’s finest: SFFD.

The light has left me. I was so happy to go back to one teensy normal today by taking a swim in the Bay. Not today. Not today.
